Soil Based Probiotics- 5 Ways They Help Heal Your Gut

Gut inflammation is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide and there is a special probiotic known as Soil-based or spore-based probiotics that can be tremendously beneficial to gut health. Not only can spore soil-based probiotics help with gut inflammation, but they play an important role in so many areas of gut health. In today’s article and video, I want to share with you why Soil Based Probiotics are so powerful for gut health not only for gut inflammation but all the other areas of gut health they can also improve.

Here’s The Dirt On Soil-Based Probiotics: 5 Main Benefits

It may sound odd but Soil-based probiotics, aka spore-forming probiotics, are derived from the natural environment, primarily soil and dirt. (*)

They are unique because they have a protective spore layer that enables them to survive harsh conditions, such as temperature fluctuations and stomach acid. This is one of the reasons they are so beneficial well once in the intestine, these spores transform into metabolically active bacteria, and they become activated when there is inflammation.

Gut inflammation can start up for a variety of reasons. Maybe you have a poor diet, maybe you have endured emotional trauma, maybe an infection, perhaps your gut is inflamed from medications that you are taking or maybe your gut is inflamed because of an imbalance in good or bad gut bacteria.

Well, This inflammation, triggers an immune response that leads to the release of inflammatory molecules, these inflammatory molecules damage the gut lining and compromise its integrity.

This, in turn, allows harmful substances to enter the bloodstream, leading to systemic inflammation and a range of gut-related disorders. Soil-based probiotics to the rescue!

1. Gut Inflammation:

Soil-based probiotics have demonstrated powerful anti-inflammatory properties. (*) By regulating the immune response in the gut, these probiotics can help balance the production of pro-inflammatory molecules, such as cytokines. (*) Studies have shown that soil-based probiotics can decrease the levels of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) (*) and here’s why this is important to you.

These cytokines are associated with oxidative stress, gut inflammation, and more tissue damage. (*) Soil-based probiotics also help with restoring the balance of the gut microbiome (*) You see… we know that when the gut microbiome is imbalanced, this imbalance aka gut dysbiosis contributes to gut inflammation and because soil-based probiotics can be delivered to the areas of the gut where they are needed the most, they in turn help restore microbial balance by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and inhibiting the growth of harmful ones.

These probiotics, such as Bacillus strains, produce antimicrobial peptides that can selectively target pathogenic (disease-causing bacteria) while maintaining the diversity of the gut microbiota.(*)

Soil-based probiotics also help enhance the function of the Tight Junctions that maintain our gut barrier. The gut barrier serves as the first line of defense against harmful toxins and pathogens. This gut barrier is home to specialized cells that make mucin and other cells that make Secretory IgA.

Soil-based probiotics have been found to enhance gut barrier function by increasing the production of tight junction proteins, these tight junctions like the ones you see here are like the gatekeepers.

These tight junction proteins maintain the integrity of the gut lining by preventing the entry of harmful substances within the gut. They prevent the gut from becoming “Leaky” also known as Leaky Gut Syndrome. (*)

Soil and Spore-based probiotics also help regulate the immune response. If you Remember what I said at the beginning of this video about chronic inflammation, I said that an overactive immune response in the gut can trigger chronic inflammation.

These probiotics can increase the levels of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, supporting the gut’s defense against inflammation.

5. Regulation of Mucin Production:

Soil-based probiotics have been shown to enhance the production of mucin. (*) Mucin is a sugar protein that forms the main component of mucus, which lines the epithelial surfaces of the gastrointestinal tract. In the gut, mucin has several critical roles.

Mucin lubricates the gut’s contents, facilitating the smooth transit of food particles and waste materials through the gastrointestinal tract. Mucin forms not only a physical barrier but also an immunological barrier.

Certain commensal/Keystone (beneficial) bacteria, like Akkermansia muciniphila, reside in the mucus layer. These bacteria play important roles in gut health and can modulate mucin production.

Soil-based probiotics improve mucin production and when we increase mucin production, it can reduce the risk of inflammation caused by pathogens.

If you have seen some of my other videos, I have talked about the importance of the mucous layer of the gut, but here’s the thing, the gut relies on a protective layer of mucin to prevent the attachment of harmful bacteria to the gut lining.  If you are someone who had a functional stool test and you had low levels of SIgA this is where you find that SIgA- in that mucous (*)

It should be pretty obvious that soil-based probiotics provide so many benefits when we suffer from chronic inflammation. Their unique properties, including their ability to survive stomach acid and their ability to not be affected by antibiotics, allow them to influence our immune response when other probiotics can’t.

This combined with the ability to restore balance to the gut microbiome, improve our gut barrier function, increase SIgA levels, reduce leaky gut, and reduce oxidative stress, and tissue damage make them a powerful addition and tool in promoting gut health.
