What is SIgA?
There are several different types of antibodies, each with different functions and producing different symptoms: Secretory IgA (SIgA), IgM, IgG, and IgE. Secretory Immunoglobulin A (SIgA) is an antibody found predominantly in mucous membranes, including the lining of the gut, respiratory tract, and urogenital tract.(*)
It serves as the body’s first line of defense by binding to pathogens and toxins, neutralizing them before they can breach the mucosal barrier and enter the bloodstream. (*) The immune system makes antibodies to tag proteins to be destroyed and removed from the body. Antibodies tag dead and dying cells as a clean-up service. They also tag foreign invaders, or pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria for the immune system to attack and destroy. (*)

Why is sIgA Stool Testing Important?
Testing SIgA on a stool test is important in Functional medicine because it provides insight into the health of your gut in three main areas. It serves as an important defense against pathogens, It helps maintain the balance of bacteria and finally, it plays a vital role in immune regulation.
1. Pathogen Defense:
Many people who suffer from bloating gas, constipation, or diarrhea have some kind of pathogen living in their gut that doesn’t belong there. Pathogen defense refers to the bodily mechanisms and processes that protect against harmful microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
This defense system encompasses multiple layers of protection to prevent infection and maintain overall health. The first line of defense includes physical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes, which serve as a formidable shield against pathogen entry.
Beyond these external barriers, the body engages a sophisticated immune response. This includes the innate immune system, which provides immediate, non-specific defense through various cells like macrophages and neutrophils that identify and eliminate invaders. The adaptive immune system offers a more tailored and potent response by producing specific antibodies and employing T-cells to target and destroy pathogens.

2. Microbiota Balance:
Another reason Functional medicine doctors test sIgA levels is to better understand the microbiota. Here again, people who suffer from bloating, gas, constipation, and diarrhea often have a disturbance to their microbiota. The term “microbiota” refers to the community of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, that inhabit a specific environment. In the context of the human body, the term often specifically refers to the collective microbial life residing within the gut.
Disruptions in the microbiota, known as dysbiosis, have been linked to a variety of diseases, including gastrointestinal disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as systemic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and even mental health issues. Maintaining a healthy microbiota is thus considered important for overall health. SIgA supports a balanced microbial environment because it promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and limits pathogenic overgrowth.

6 Reasons You Have Low SIgA Levels on Your Stool Test
Low SIgA levels on a stool test can be associated with several factors: Let’s review some of them.

1. Chronic Stress:
Prolonged stress (Cortisol and Adrenaline) can cause low SIgA production, compromising immune responses in the gut. (*) Stress is a prevalent factor in our modern lives, affecting not only psychological well-being but also physiological systems, including the immune system.
SIgA, an antibody found in mucosal linings of the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory passages, and urogenital surfaces, plays a crucial role in neutralizing pathogens and toxins. Research indicates that both acute and chronic stress can significantly reduce SIgA levels.
This reduction occurs through mechanisms involving the neuroendocrine response, where stress triggers the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to release cortisol, a stress hormone that suppresses SIgA production. Additionally, chronic stress can cause sustained cortisol levels, leading to chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation, further depleting SIgA.
The implications of reduced SIgA due to stress include weakened mucosal defenses, increased susceptibility to infections, digestive complaints, and conditions like leaky gut syndrome. Patients often ask what they can do to improve their ability to handle stress. The answer lies in supporting your adrenal glands. These are the glands that produce Cortisol and Adrenaline.
Dietary modifications, including anti-inflammatory foods, probiotics, and prebiotics, vitamin C, alongside proper hydration and specific supplements, can also support adrenal health.

2. Imbalanced Diet:
Poor nutrition, including low fiber intake and high consumption of processed foods, can adversely affect sIgA levels.

For instance, vitamin A and zinc play pivotal roles in maintaining the integrity of gut epithelial cells and facilitating their role in immune defense. Additionally, vitamin D is instrumental in modulating both innate and adaptive immune responses, influencing SIgA production.(*)
When the body lacks these nutrients, the immune system’s ability to respond effectively to pathogens diminishes, leading to a reduction in SIgA synthesis. Poor nutrition and nutrient deficiencies can exacerbate intestinal dysbiosis (an imbalance in the gut microbiota), which further decreases SIgA levels since a healthy gut microbiome promotes the production of this critical immunoglobulin.
The absence of a balanced diet rich in fiber, polyphenols, and prebiotics can exacerbate this dysbiosis, causing further compromise to mucosal immunity. Inflammation, often a consequence of nutritional deficiencies, disrupts normal gut function and further hinders SIgA production. Thus, a diet lacking essential nutrients sets off a cascade of negative effects on immune health, ultimately reflected in low SIgA levels in stool tests.

3. Intestinal Infections:

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated during stress, releasing cortisol, a hormone that has immunosuppressive effects. Elevated cortisol levels can suppress the production and secretion of SIgA, weakening the mucosal immune barrier.
Secondly, the inflammation caused by the infection can disrupt the mucosal tissues directly. Inflammatory cytokines and other immune mediators can damage the epithelial cells of the gut, impairing their ability to produce SIgA effectively.
Additionally, an infection can alter the gut microbiota composition, leading to dysbiosis—a state of microbial imbalance. Healthy gut flora is essential for maintaining optimal SIgA production. An imbalance in this microbial community can hamper the body’s ability to produce SIgA, further weakening mucosal immunity.
This reduction in SIgA levels can have several implications, including increased vulnerability to recurrent infections, impaired digestion, and conditions such as “leaky gut syndrome,” where the intestinal barrier becomes permeable, allowing pathogens and toxins to enter the bloodstream.
Addressing Intestinal Infections When You Have Low SIgA
To mitigate these adverse effects, it’s crucial to address intestinal infections promptly with appropriate medical interventions.

Oregano oil is well-regarded for its potent antimicrobial properties, largely attributed to two active ingredients: carvacrol and thymol. While some studies have shown that pumpkin seed extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, they are generally milder compared to more potent antimicrobial agents like oregano oil and Monolaurin. #3 Monolaurin
Monolaurin is considered a powerful antimicrobial agent. Monolaurin, a monoglyceride derived from lauric acid (which is found in coconut oil and breast milk), has been widely studied for its potent antimicrobial properties. Monolaurin is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Streptococcus species.
Monolaurin works by disrupting the lipid membranes of these bacteria. Monolaurin has demonstrated effectiveness against various lipid-coated viruses. These include herpes simplex virus (HSV), influenza, and HIV. Monolaurin works by solubilizing the lipids in the viral envelope, thus inactivating the virus. Autoimmune diseases involve the immune system erroneously attacking the body’s tissues, and this chronic state of immune dysregulation can impact the production of SIgA. SIgA serves as a crucial component of the mucosal immune system, which provides a protective layer on mucosal surfaces, including the gastrointestinal tract, and guards against pathogens.
In the context of autoimmune diseases, several mechanisms can lead to depleted SIgA levels.(*) First, the ongoing immune response in autoimmune diseases often involves widespread inflammation, which can damage the epithelial cells responsible for the production and secretion of SIgA in the gut lining.
These epithelial cells are essential for synthesizing the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR), which is critical for transporting SIgA to the gut mucosal surfaces. Damage or dysfunction of these cells can directly reduce SIgA levels.
The systemic nature of many autoimmune diseases can lead to endocrine disruptions, including elevated cortisol levels due to chronic stress and immune system activity. Cortisol, a stress hormone, can suppress the immune response and inhibit the synthesis of SIgA, further contributing to low levels. Other hormones are also affected such as insulin, Estrogen, Progesterone, Leptin, and thyroid.
Autoimmune conditions often lead to dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbiota.(*) The gut microbiome plays an essential role in modulating the immune system and promoting the secretion of SIgA.(*) Disturbances in the microbiota can therefore translate to impaired SIgA production.
Individuals with autoimmune diseases may exhibit disrupted mucosal immunity, reflected in lower SIgA levels on stool testing.

5. Chronic Inflammation:

In certain chronic inflammatory conditions, like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or chronic infections, the continuous immune response can deplete the precursors and immune cells necessary for producing SIgA.(*) Furthermore, chronic inflammation often disrupts the gut microbiota balance — also known as dysbiosis — which plays a critical role in maintaining mucosal immunity and facilitating the optimal production of SIgA.
This imbalance can result in reduced stimulation of SIgA production. Consequently, chronic inflammation leads to low SIgA levels on stool tests, reflecting impaired mucosal immunity and making the body more susceptible to recurring infections, further inflammatory conditions, and digestive disturbances.
Addressing chronic inflammation involves not only targeting the immediate causes but also supporting overall mucosal health. Anti-inflammatory dietary choices, stress management techniques, Adrenal gland supplementation, adequate sleep, and specific probiotics (for your microbiome) are vital strategies for mitigating inflammation and helping restore healthy SIgA levels.

6. Genetics:
Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to lower SIgA levels.

Low Secretory IgA (sIgA) on Stool Test Can Cause Several Problems
Notice this patient with an extremely low SIgA on stool testing. Normal Levels are 510-2010. Normally, I like to see these levels above 1700 ug/g. When levels are this low you can expect to see any of the problems you see below.
1. Increased Pathogen Adherence and Invasion:
Without adequate sIgA, bacteria, viruses, yeast, and toxins can adhere more easily to the intestinal epithelial cells, increasing the risk of infection and inflammation.
2. Imbalance in Gut Microbiota (Dysbiosis):
Low sIgA levels can lead to an imbalance in the gut microbiota, promoting the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast which can produce toxins and other inflammatory substances that damage the gut lining. It can also stress the liver.
3. Weakened Immune Protection:
The gut is less protected from immune challenges when you have low levels of sIgA, making it easier for pathogens to penetrate the epithelial barrier and trigger immune responses that can create inflammation and further increase gut permeability (Leaky Gut)
4. Chronic Inflammation:
With more pathogens and toxins penetrating the gut lining, the body’s immune response can result in chronic intestinal inflammation. Chronic inflammation can damage the cells of the gut lining, contributing to increased permeability.
5-Loss of Oral Tolerance.
Oral tolerance is your immune system’s ability to tolerate acceptable foods and chemicals while responding appropriately to bacteria or other harmful compounds. When you lose oral tolerance, it means your immune system has become hyper-sensitive and no longer responds appropriately to foods. People who suffer from a loss of oral tolerance (low SIgA) initially have multiple food reactions/allergies/sensitivities. If ignored long enough, the condition can progress into Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome is a challenging and often misunderstood condition that significantly impacts the lives of those who suffer from it. MCS can lead to debilitating symptoms, including headaches, cognitive dysfunction, respiratory issues, and fatigue.
Low sIgA Can Cause Leaky Gut
Low levels of secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA) on a stool test can indeed contribute to a condition commonly referred to as “leaky gut,” or increased intestinal permeability.
sIgA plays a critical role in the immune defense of the mucosal linings, particularly in the gut. (*)
sIgA can neutralize pathogens and toxins before they can adhere to and penetrate the gut lining.
sIgA helps maintain a balanced microbial community by preventing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and supporting beneficial bacteria.
By forming immune complexes with antigens, sIgA prevents these potentially harmful substances from breaching the intestinal barrier.
How To Fix and Improve Low Improving SIgA Levels
Enhancing SIgA levels involves a multifaceted approach focusing on nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted supplements:
1. Correct High or Low Cortisol levels. Incorporating stress-reducing practices such as meditation, yoga, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity can help improve SIgA production.
2. Balanced Diet. Consuming a diet rich in whole foods, fibers, fermented foods (probiotics), and healthy fats supports gut health and SIgA levels. Avoiding processed foods and excessive sugars is also beneficial.
3. Probiotics and Prebiotics. Probiotic supplements and prebiotic-rich foods (e.g., garlic, onions, asparagus) help maintain a healthy gut microbiome conducive to optimal SIgA production.
4. Anti-inflammatory Supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids, glutamine, zinc carnosine, and other anti-inflammatory supplements can support the gut lining and enhance SIgA levels.
5. Address Infections and Dysbiosis: Treating underlying infections and correcting dysbiosis with appropriate medical or natural interventions can help restore SIgA levels
6. Nutritional supplementation. This includes things like L-glutamine, DGL, N-acetyl D Glucosamine, Bioflavonoids, Polyphenols, Mastic Gum, Zinc Carnosine, Phospholipids, Bismuth, Resveratrol. Colostrum, Turmeric, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and amino acids.
