Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism aggravates stress and causes damage
Stress is dangerous. Modern life is such that almost everyone suffers some degree of stress and as many 66 percent of visits to the doctor are due to complaints that are related to stress.
In any kind of stress, the body reacts by producing epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol (adrenal hormones) that indicate the fight or flight response of the body to any critical event. During this time, you may experience a pounding heart, sweating palms, increased blood pressure and faster breathing. This can happen during an argument, an interview, a meeting, an exam or in any stressful situation.
However, these are stresses of daily life and the body soon returns to normal. In unfortunate conditions like divorce, death, chronic or severe illnesses, financial problems and other life changes, stress become a constant companion. Similarly, physical problems like gut infections, anemia, food sensitivities or intolerances, blood sugar problems, auto-immune diseases, inflammation and even modern-day pollutions and environmental toxins can cause constant metabolic stress.
If you have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, chronic stress can lead to even greater physical problems. Stress management is an important tool in managing Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and its related symptoms.
The other side effects of Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism
When you have stress, the body is constantly flooded with cortisol. This causes many problems and is even linked to auto-immune diseases such as Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. Adrenal stress can cause symptoms like:
- Sleep disturbances
- Tiredness or constant fatigue
- Mood swings
- Loss of libido
- Caffeine or sugar cravings
- Light headedness
- Loss of energy
- Gastric ulcers
- Lowered immunity
- Increased belly fat
- Postural hypotension
As Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism causes similar symptoms, your symptoms simply worsen with adrenal stress.
How supplements and alternative remedies help with adrenal stresses
You may be practicing all the right stress relieving remedies like meditation, relaxation techniques, exercise and other activities, but you can actually find medications or supplements that will help your body already under the effects of Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism. These remedies called adrenal adaptogens include:
- Ginseng (panax and Siberian)
- Licorice root
- Holy basil
These herbal remedies are plant based and so are safer to take. More importantly, they offer the body required support to combat chronic stress as they soothe inflammation and increase energy levels in the body. Just because they are safe does not mean that they are not potent; however, a practitioner needs to prescribe the right dose of these remedies for them to work most effectively.
What else can you do to eliminate stress?
There are many remedies that will help combat stress and you should do whatever helps you the most. Among the remedies you should adopt are:
- Avoid stimulants like alcohol, cigarettes and other substances
- Reduce intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars
- Avoid foods that contribute to inflammation like high fructose corn syrup, canola oil, refined foods and food allergens
- Take foods that are a source of antioxidants and essential fatty acids
- Eat foods that are nutritionally sound
- Get enough sleep
