Gluten Detected In Cosmetics and Personal Hygeine Products

January 24, 2014 //  by Dr Hagmeyer

Chances are if you have been diagnosed with any of the following

  • IBS
  • Celiac disease
  • Colon cancer
  • UC
  • Crohn’s
  • SIBO
  • Leaky Gut
  • Autoimmune disease

Hopefully you have already eliminated gluten. But what if  after being diagnosed, you have done a great job at removing the pasta, cereals, bagels, pizza and other foods we typically think of when it comes to gluten, but you are still suffering with diarrhea, bloating, inflammation, GERD, Constipation, Brain Fog, Fatigue.

It’s Time To Dig A Little Deeper and Go Plan B

We talked about cross reactivity in other articles as a potential problem, but today, I want to help you overcome another sneaky place gluten can show up. This one perhaps has not even crossed your mind yet. For some individuals this may be the last tweak that gets them over the plateau. We are talking today about hidden gluten exposure found in cosmetics or hygiene products.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein

A recent research report published by the National Institute for Health Sciences in Japan accumulated data from 2009 to 2013 and found 1900 patients who reported allergic reaction after using a soap containing hydrolyzed wheat protein.  The diagnosis for these individuals was – Wheat Dependent Exercise Induced Asthma (WDEIA).

This is not the first time a report like this has surfaced.  Other studies have identified asthma in hairdressers exposed to hydrolyzed wheat protein as well(1).

RISK OF ALLERGY

Moral Of The Story-Check Your Make-UP, Hair Care Products and Medications.

For many people, simply eliminating gluten containing foods is challenging enough. However, in most cases this is not enough. If you continue to suffer, before you go back to eating a gluten filled diet, it’s time to start reading your labels in your personal hygiene products.

This means shampoos, lipsticks, moisturizes, deodorant, shaving gels, hairspray, foundation , toothpaste, soap, and your medications.

Having worked with many people all over the world, who have struggled with chronic health problems like Asthma, inflammatory skin conditions,  Urticaria, Hives, Dermatitis often if symptoms persist after cleaning up the diet, it often comes down to the personal health care products they have been using.
