What is Leaky Gut?
There is a condition called ‘leaky gut syndrome’ or just leaky gut that can set the stage and trigger chronic illness. and many times the symptoms of a leaky gut, go far beyond a digestive problem. Thanks to our modern environment, stress, eating on the go, these symptoms are much more common than you may think. In fact, millions of people are struggling with leaky gut syndrome without even knowing it.
Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, is famous for having said, “All disease begins in the gut. One of the gut problems I wanted to shoot a quick video on was the overlooked symptoms of a leaky gut.
Hey There! I’m Dr Hagmeyer and in today’s video I want to review some of the symptoms that often indicate you have a leaky gut.
1. Food Allergies or Sensitivity to Certain Foods
Many scientific studies point to a connection between leaky gut and food allergies/sensitivities.(*) Your gut becomes inflamed when you eat something you’re sensitive to, and inflammation often causes a leaky gut.
On the flip side, a leaky gut also causes inflammation. It’s a vicious cycle. If you think you have food sensitivities, eliminate some of the more common culprits. These include eggs, dairy, gluten, corn, soy, peanuts, and nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant) and many others including lectins. You can also get tested for delayed food sensitives or food allergies.
2. Mood Issues and Fluctuations
Another overlooked symptoms of a leaky gut include mood and mental health. Mental health conditions like mood swings, anxiety, depression, ADD and ADHD, PANS and PANDAS, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinsons, dementia, Headaches and migraines are also linked to leaky gut.
There’s something called the gut-brain axis, and it basically describes the neural pathway between our digestive system and the brain and the pathway that they share. When there is gut inflammation there is usually brain inflammation.
Its crazy to think about, but as much as 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut. So, if you have a problem in your gut, it can have a direct impact on your mental health.
3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, or Other Gastrointestinal Diseases
Gas, bloating, and chronic diarrhea are all symptoms that point to a leaky gut. But its almost a given that if you have IBD like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or celiac disease that you have almost certainly have leaky gut syndrome.
4. Malabsorption of Nutrients
Often overlooked, malabsorption of nutrients is another common symptom of a leaky gut. If you are unintentionally losing weight, this could also point to a leaky gut. Keep in mind that you can only heal if you absorb your nutrients. Malabsorption of nutrients not only causes weight loss but can show up you very quickly in our hair, skin and nails.
Some of the most common nutrient deficiencies will be things like B12, Iron, Zinc, magnesium, and many of our fat soluble vitamins A,D,E,K as well as our Omega 3 and omega 6’s.
5. Autoimmune Disorders
If you’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Hashimotos, celiac disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or psoriasis, there’s a good chance that a leaky gut is triggering your autoimmune disease, many doctors overlook leaky gut as a trigger of autoimmunity. If you have any of these autoimmune disease and you haven’t given up gluten, this might be something you want to eliminate along with other inflammatory foods.
6. Inflammatory Skin Disorders or Skin Problems
Inflammatory skin disorders like rosacea, acne, and eczema are linked to leaky gut syndrome because of the gut-skin connection. New research shows that even simple skin issues like acne, Rosacea, eczema can be caused by leaky gut and gut inflammation.
7. Thyroid Issues
There’s a link between low thyroid function and leaky gut syndrome as well. Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disorder also referred to as chronic thyroiditis (*),(*) is often affected by many issues in the gut, and leaky gut syndrome is one problem I see in many of my patients on testing. If you suffer with chronic fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and depression, constipation, Low thyroid function could be a culprit.
