6 Foods That Zap Energy When You Have Thyroid Issues

People who have thyroid issues are already walking around feeling fatigued and sluggish in life. (*) If you are like so many patients with thyroid issues, you feel like your energy has been zapped right out of you. Believe it or not, certain foods you may be eating might be zapping your energy and vitality.  Let’s review six foods that every thyroid sufferer should avoid if they are experiencing thyroid fatigue.

1. Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary foods often lead to fatigue, and understanding why this happens involves looking at how our body processes sugar to produce energy, primarily through ATP production in the mitochondria.

Why: Foods and drinks with high sugar content cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels followed by quick drops, leading to energy crashes. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the primary energy carrier in cells. It is produced in the mitochondria, the cell’s powerhouse. These organelles convert glucose (derived from carbohydrates like sugar) into ATP through metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

When you consume sugary foods, glucose is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to a quick spike in blood sugar levels. This rapid influx of glucose is quickly utilized by cells to produce ATP, offering an initial surge of energy. BUT…..The body responds to high blood glucose levels by releasing insulin, a hormone that helps cells absorb glucose from the bloodstream. Regularly consuming excessive amounts of sugar can lead to insulin resistance, where cells no longer respond properly to insulin. This can further result in chronic fatigue since glucose is not efficiently utilized for ATP production, leading to higher blood sugar levels and potentially contributing to metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes.

2. Refined Carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates are the bad carbohydrates you want to avoid.

Refined carbohydrates also lack essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals found in whole foods. Consuming foods with low nutrient density does not provide the body with the necessary nutrients like B vitamins and magnesium that are crucial for energy production and metabolism. The blood sugar roller coaster caused by refined carbohydrates can affect thyroid hormone levels, and stress hormones like cortisol, which can contribute to feeling like your energy has been zapped.

3. Fried and Fatty Foods

Fried foods can contribute to feelings of fatigue and zapped for several reasons.

Why: Fried foods are typically high in unhealthy fats, such as trans fats. These fats take longer to digest compared to carbohydrates and proteins, which can lead to a feeling of sluggishness and tiredness as your body expends more energy on digestion. Additionally, trans fats can contribute to chronic inflammation and metabolic disturbances, potentially exacerbating feelings of fatigue. Fried foods often go hand-in-hand with refined carbohydrates (e.g., fried chicken with breading, and fries) which can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar followed by crashes, similar to the effect seen with refined carbs alone.

4. Soy and Soy-Based Products

Soy is another food that can zap your energy.

Why: Soy, particularly in the United States, is often a Genetically Modified crop engineered to be glyphosate-resistant. This has led to significant use of glyphosate to manage weed growth around soy plants. Multiple Studies show that glyphosate and other pesticides have the potential to disrupt endocrine function, which includes the thyroid gland, and sex hormones. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with hormonal signaling pathways.

  1. After the stimulating effects of caffeine wear off, many people experience a “crash,” characterized by a sudden drop in energy levels, increased fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. This crash results from the caffeine leaving the system.
  2. Regular consumption of caffeine can lead to tolerance, where the body becomes accustomed to its effects, requiring increasing amounts to achieve the same alertness. Over time, this can cause reliance on caffeine to function properly, making baseline energy levels feel lower.
  3. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep and relaxation. When caffeine wears off, the accumulated adenosine can create a strong urge to rest, leading to increased feelings of fatigue.
  4. Caffeine is also a diuretic, meaning it can increase the frequency of urination, which can lead to dehydration if not countered with adequate water intake. Dehydration is linked to fatigue and reduced cognitive function.
  5. Caffeine can harbor mycotoxins from mold. Mold mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain types of mold, and exposure to them can lead to a variety of health problems, including fatigue. Mycotoxins can exert toxic effects on various organs, particularly the liver, which is responsible for detoxification.
  6. High doses of caffeine can elevate stress hormones, such as cortisol, which, in the long term, can contribute to feelings of chronic stress and fatigue
